Epidemiology plays a fundamental role in public health. In this course, you will learn how to assess disease patterns in different population groups and investigate determinants contributing to the occurrence of disease or health-related events. You will be introduced to various epidemiological study designs and the applications of them to identify potential causes of specified diseases or ill health in community or clinical settings. Importantly, you will learn the tools to identify common sources of error in public health studies and employ a critical appraisal approach to evaluating epidemiological evidence in the health literature. In addition, you will explore the applications of the basic concepts and tools of epidemiology to specific topics on infectious disease outbreak investigation and surveillance, screening and other strategies for disease prevention. Having demonstrated your understanding of the basic concepts of epidemiology and critical analysis approaches to investigating health issues, you'll have the skills to apply problem solving techniques to disease control and prevention in communities.
